HIV/AIDS Doctor in Pune

After completing his fellowship in HIV medicine from Pune Dr.Sachin Melinkeri has worked at many hospitals. At present he has working as an Associate Consultant in Medicine at the K.E.M Hospital Pune and Consultant in HIV Medicine at the Sahyadri Speciality Hospital Pune. Since 2004 he has been involved in the field of HIV Medicine and treated many HIV/AIDS infected patients. He Was given a scholorship from the European AIDS Clinical Society to further train in the field of HIV Medicine at The Royal Free Hospital London under Prof. Mike Youle and also Did the Advanced course in HIV Medicine in 2007 in Montpellier France. He practiced his specialty at Pune and managed many patients and also reached the unreached. He lectured several NGOs. He has participated actively in organizing National Scientific Conferences on HIV/AIDS to propagate the need for active and proper management of HIV with International Guidelines He has also good experience of delivering lectures and talks for HIGH RISK groups and students as well.

Detected and presented 1st case of HIV-1 Group O from Pune, India Presented “Discordant couples can have a HIV Negative child without infecting the mother when father is HIV positive and mother is HIV Negative”. Presented “Art of ART” (Anti-Retroviral Therapy) Was given a scholorship from the European AIDS Clinical Society to further train in the field of HIV Medicine at The Royal Free Hospital London under Prof. Mike Youle. Did the Advanced course in HIV Medicine in 2007 in Montpellier France. Presented as a poster “Immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrome (IRIS)” at DERMACON in the year 2009 Authored few chapters on Opportunistic Infections O.I.s and Anti-retroviral Therapy in AIDS, Reference guide for medical practitioners. Contributor for Quality Improvement (Q.I.) self assessment tool for private sector providers in HIV Medicine conducted by F.H.I. (Family Health International) and PSP One. Invited by USAIDS/ AVERT Society to conduct lectures for general practitioners.

 

With an estimated 2.4 million individuals living with HIV/AIDS, India ranks third, next to South Africa and Nigeria, in number of HIV cases. The HIV epidemic in India is concentrated with a high prevalence among most at-risk populations including female sex workers, injecting drug users, men who have sex with men, and male-to-female transgender people.
Children under 15 years of age account for 4.4% of all infections, and 39% percent of all HIV infections are estimated to be among women (0.93 million women, 43,000 pregnant women)1. Four high-burden states of South India- Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu- account for 57% of HIV infections in India, while West Bengal, Gujarat, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh together account for 22% of infections. Moreover, Punjab, Odisha, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh account for 12% of HIV infections.
Stemming an epidemic of this magnitude requires collaborative work among all stakeholders involved, including government, private, and civil society sectors, strong institutional capacities to carry out work, and political commitment at the highest levels both for prevention and treatment.
It is necessary to focus on all vulnerable populations, from infants born to HIV positive women to sexual minorities, whose socially marginalized status makes it difficult to reach them with information, awareness, and stigma-free services. Curbing the HIV epidemic necessitates broadening the scope of services beyond health, to encompass nutrition, psycho-social support, education, legal, livelihood, and social protection needs for individuals at-risk or living with HIV.
